Freeing Space Safely in Windows 11: Storage Sense and Cleanup Suggestions
Do not delete a random folder when the disk is full. See what takes up space with the storage tools of Windows 11, understand the deletion options and check the risk of return.

The best first action when the disk is full is not to run a "cleaner" without understanding what you are deleting. First see where the field is going. Then evaluate Windows' temporary files separately with your personal files. This guide is based on Windows 11's own tools.
1. Check free space and large file groups
Check the free space of drivers by opening the "This computer" screen in File Explorer. Then go to Settings > System > Storage path. Microsoft's storage screen will help you examine the space covered by applications, temporary files and other file groups. Storage settings
This is not an error alone if a photo or video archive takes up as much space as you would expect. The problem is if you still want to keep these files on the device. If you decide to move, do not remove a single copy without checking that the file can be opened on the target disk.
2. Review the cleaning suggestions one by one
Open the "Cleanup suggestions" section on the same Storage screen. Microsoft recommends that you review groups here, such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-equivalent content, and unused applications. Read the meaning of each group you select; you don't have to mark all boxes at once. Don't make space on Windows
For example, don't consider the video file you deliver to a customer unnecessary because it is "old". Set the storage time and backup requirement according to your own business. Windows can show how much space you will earn; it cannot determine the value of the file for you.
3. consciously adjust Smart Storage
Smart Storage can automatically clean temporary files and certain content in the Recycle Bin according to its rules. According to Microsoft, Downloads and cloud content are not addressed in default behavior unless you set them to manage. The feature runs on the system drive. Smart Storage behavior
Look at the time options before opening auto-run. The question "Do I want to keep this a month later?" is especially important for the Downloads folder. Moving the contract, invoice, work file, or delivery archive you downloaded into its permanent folder establishes a more straightforward layout.
4. Stop and think in Windows.old
Microsoft states that deleting the previous Windows installation can remove the option to return to the old version and the process cannot be undone. So don't choose automatically by saying "this saves the most space". If you haven't tested the new installation yet, it may be more valuable for you to maintain the possibility of a return.
5. Save the result
Note the free space before and after cleaning. Then open a few files and applications that you use daily. This simple check makes the done process measurable. If the same files are growing again in a short time, examine your habit of producing and archiving files instead of repeating them over and over again.
Storage cleaning is not a guarantee of performance. The only reason for slowness may not be disk load. However, removing unnecessary files by recognizing them is a much more controlled start than deleting a random system folder.
