Just because you like the desktop of an operating system doesn't mean you can do all your daily work with it. Trying Ubuntu over USB before installing it permanently offers a start to check your network, audio, screen, and file habits. However, trial preparation also requires attention: writing an installation image on USB is not copying the file in the normal way.

Before preparing USB memory

Ubuntu's current official trial guideExplains the transfer of the installation image to USB memory with a special writing tool and warns that this process will delete data from memory. Do not use the memory containing important files without preparation. Check twice that the target disk you select is indeed USB memory.

Get the operating system image from the official source. Examine the appropriate option for your computer's architecture and hardware; especially don't evaluate Apple Silicon computers in the same installation stream as an ordinary x86 computer. Based on the manufacturer's and Ubuntu's related hardware descriptions.

Separate installation by trial

The key to the start menu from USB can vary from device to device. See the document of your own computer; do not randomly close security settings as it is shown in a single video. When Ubuntu is turned on, choose the try option instead of the permanent installation.

Being working in a live environment does not mean that a wrong disk operation is impossible. Do not format the internal disk or execute commands you do not know. If your goal is to gain experience, leave the partitioning and installation decision to a separate stage.

Test five real jobs in order

Prepare your own trial list: connect to the wireless network, control the speaker and microphone, try screen brightness or external screen, use a web application, and open and export a sample file. Use test files instead of sensitive document. Do not interpret the result 'Desktop opened' as all peripherals are running.

According to Ubuntu's statement, the preview works with open source drivers; some hardware-needed special drivers may not be available in this environment. So don't count one missing function as a final mismatch, and one successful attempt as a permanent installation guarantee. Save the result with the correct limit.

Make the decision at the end of the try

A three-column note is enough: it worked, it requires additional review, it blocks my daily job. If you are going to use an alternative to an application, check if it has opened your actual file correctly, not just its name.

When the trial is over, restart the system normally and remove USB at the desired stage. Also verify the backup of your important data if you decide to switch to permanent installation. A good try is not to immediately install a new system on the computer; it's to get you to make a more robust decision about how your business will work.
