How to Write a 30-Second Reels Script: Timing and an Example

You can't understand the duration of a Reels text by yourself from the word count. This guide shows how to plot a 30-second plan by calculating the speed of speech and pauses together.

When writing a Reels text of 30 seconds, first calculate the number of words, not the amount of time you can actually devote to speaking. It also takes time to show a result on screen, make a short pause, or have your closing card read. You don't have to fill out the entire video with speech.

In this guide, 30 seconds Editorial target. Instagram's technical time limit is not used as an ideal video length or access guarantee. The following speech speeds are not averages measured for Turkish, but sample account entries that you can use to plan your own record.

How many words should the 30 second Reels be?

There is no single correct word count. Two people can read the same text at different speed. The numbers change the time you take when displaying foreign tool names, highlights, and screens.

The initial account is as follows:

Word budget = (target time ⁇ non-talk time) ⁇ number of words per minute ⁇ 60

For example, imagine in the video that you devote 6 seconds to pauses and showing the result on the screen. You have 24 seconds for speech. If you choose a hypothetical speed of 130 words per minute:

(30 ⁇ 6) ⁇ 130 ⁇ 60 = 52 words

This number does not prove that the read sound will last exactly 30 seconds. It limits the first text. The final decision is made with the actual duration of the recorded sound.

The speed of speech used in the accountTalk timeNon-talk timeExample word budget
100 words per minute24 seconds6 seconds40 words
120 words per minute24 seconds6 seconds48 words
130 words per minute24 seconds6 seconds52 words
150 words per minute24 seconds6 seconds60 words

Don't read the table as "faster is better." If your goal is to be understood, talking less can be a more useful choice when performing a complex process on the screen.

How do you find your own speed of speech?

Read a short text, similar to the video you are going to write, with the natural tone you want to use. Measure the duration of the recording and note the number of words.

Number of words per minute = number of words read ⁇ 60 ⁇ record time

For example, if a 60 word text lasts 30 seconds along with its pauses, the total speed for that record is 120 words/minute. In this case, pauses are already in the measurement. Do not add the same breaks a second time in the formula.

Use one of two methods:

  • On the actual recording: Based on the total reading speed that includes pauses, calculate only the quiet screen times you will add later.
  • Through planning: Select the speed of speech as an assumption. Also reserve a share for pauses and silent screen times.

Mixing the two methods causes you to shorten the text more than necessary, or short-guess the video as it is.

Split text into four functions

30 don't try to tell the whole subject in seconds, just one problem and choose one result.

EpisodeSample time budgetThe work he will do
Hook0–3 secondsMake the problem clear to the viewer
Description3–8 secondsTell me where the problem came from.
Application8–24 secondsShow at most a few understandable steps
Closing24–30 secondsShow the result and make a single call

This distribution is not a platform rule, it's a working skeleton. Change times if the actual audio recording and operation time in the image are different. Do not force each sentence into the table.

You don't have to say "no one knows about this" for Hook. The phrase "Is the post you're preparing cut on the phone?" directly describes who the video is about.

Original example of 52 words

The following example is 52 words when the words separated by space are counted. It is not a true performance test or technical measure claim of a particular Instagram screen.

Is your post in Canva cut on the phone? The problem is sometimes not in the design, but at the rate you choose. First determine where the sharing will appear. Then remove the title, face and important details from the edges. Preview the design on the small screen before downloading it. Do the final control in the app you will share. So instead of guessing which area it appears, you check it. Save this checklist for your next design.

At the hypothetical 130 word/minute speed, the speech account for this text is 24 seconds. With a total pause of six seconds and an image share, the 30 second plan is formed. After performing the voiceover, replace this assumption with the actual record.

In the image plan, you can show the problem first, then the corrected frame. Instead of reading the long menu names that already appear on the screen individually, divide them into points that make it easier to decide to speak.

If the text is long, what do you take out first?

The first solution is not to speed up the whole sound. Ask the question first: "Does this sentence change the job that the viewer is going to do?"

Switch directly to the problem instead of an introduction like "I'll show you how to do it in today's video." Delete one if you're describing the same result twice with different words. Stop re-reading the detail that the image already shows.

Make one choice in closing as well. Don't ask him to save, comment, share, go to his profile and send a message at the same time. If you showed a checklist, "Save it for your next design" might be enough closure.

Even so, if the text is long, divide the subject into two videos. Do not detract to fit it in thirty seconds.

Short text brief to be given to artificial intelligence

When receiving help from a text-making tool, explain the limits instead of just saying "Write 30 seconds of text":

Konu: [tek konu]
İzleyicinin sorunu: [somut sorun]
Videonun sonunda yapabileceği şey: [tek sonuç]
Toplam hedef: 30 saniye
Konuşmasız görüntü ve duraklama payı: 6 saniye
İlk taslak kelime bütçesi: yaklaşık 52 kelime
Yapı: doğrudan kanca, kısa açıklama, uygulanabilir adımlar, tek kapanış
Üslup: doğal Türkçe ve seslendirilebilir cümleler
Uydurma sonuç, test, özellik veya erişim garantisi ekleme.
Metnin kelime sayısını ayrıca bildir. Süreyi kesinmiş gibi sunma.

Receiving the script is not the final step. Check the tool’s word count, record the narration and measure it on the timeline. A script can fit the word limit and still take too long when spoken naturally.

Final pre-publication check

Listen once more with the visuals. Is the on-screen action clear when the sentence ends? Is there enough time to read the closing card? Do subtitles stay in sync with the speech?

Check the final exported video too. Do not approve its timing from the text document alone.

In conclusion: Start with one goal. Allow time without speech, calculate the word budget, then adjust using the actual recording. A good 30-second Reel does not cram in the most information; it helps the viewer understand one clear task.

To build a repeatable Reels production process for your brand, let’s work together.
